#throwbackthursday ~ Holiday Manicures

Are you already in the Christmas mood? Today was my last day of work before the Holidays and I have so many things I need to organize before Christmas Eve (like actually getting gifts for the family and friends). I have not done a Christmas themed manicure this year, yet, and I honestly do not know when I get around to painting my nails again. So I thought I'd briefly recapitulate my favorite Holiday manicures I have done over the years.

Gift Guide For The Nail Polish Obsessed

Happy third advent everyone!

Only 10 days until Christmas. Have you finished your gift shopping, yet? This year, I am a bit late and haven't bought a single present so far. I do have some ideas, though, so I only need to find the time and patience to dive into the Christmas shopping madness in my city - but I'll probably end up ordering many things online :)
If you have family members or friends who are just as obessed with nail polish as you, or if you're looking for something to treat yourself with this Christmas, I put together a little gift guide with nail items as an inspiration.

Huge Sally Hansen Giveaway!

Hi everyone!

Do you remember me? I know, I have been gone for quite a while now. In mid-November I went to a scientific meeting in Washington DC and afterwards I spent a few days in New York City (I have been there three times and I cannot get enough of this city). On that trip I fell sick with a pretty persistant flu and it took me a while to get rid of it. Needless to say, I did not really feel like painting my nails during this time and hence I did not have much to post during the past weeks. I do have a USA haul coming up soon, so stay tuned for that!

To make up for my lack of posting I put together a few sets with Sally Hansen items that I hope you will enjoy.

Set 1 contains 4 Miracle Gel polishes in the shades Dig Fig, Red Eye, Pretty Piggy and Bare Dare, as well as two gel top coats.

Set 2 contains 3 polishes from the Guilty Pleasures LE (Rule Of Plum, Diamond Jubilee, Glitter Bomb), a No Chip top coat and a Mircale Growth Serum.

Set 3 consists of 5 nail care items: InstaDri top coat, Diamond Strength nail hardener, Miracle Growth Serum, Miracle Cure strengthener and Vitamin E nail & cuticle oil.

Here is what you need to do for a chance to win one of those three sets:
  • To enter, fill in the Rafflecopter form below.
  • You must be 18 or older to participate. If you're below 18, I need your parents permission to give me your address in case you win.
  • The giveaway starts now and runs until December 22, 12am CET.
  • I will draw three winners who will each win one of the sets on December 23.
  • Winners will be announced on my blog and contacted via the email address provided by Rafflecopter.
  • The prizes will be sent out after Christmas! I cannot be held responsible for damaged or lost items.
  • Open to Europe only. Due to shipping restrictions, the prize cannot be shipped to the UK, sorry :(
  • For an international giveaway, head over to my Instagram and/or Facebook page, where I am giving away an OPI set!

Good luck!

[Swatch & Review] Sally Hansen Guilty Pleasures Collection ~ Rule Of Plum, Glitter Bomb & Diamond Jubilee

Happy Sunday everyone!

I hope you're all having a great weekend so far! You may have realized that I have been posting a bit less this month. Work just keeps me super busy, plus I am preparing for a scientific meeting in Washington DC and a job interview in Cincinnati next week. I am excited and scared at the same time. As a reward, I am going to NYC afterwards to do some damage to my wallet and do some early Christmas shopping.

Yesterday I received three of six polishes from the new Sally Hansen Guilty Pleasures Limited Edition for winter 2014. They looked so pretty in their bottles, I had to swatch them immediately. For my thoughts on Rule Of Plum, Glitter Bomb and Diamond Jubilee, read on after the jump!

L'Oreal Color Riche - Hidden Gems

Hi everyone!

Today I have a little drugstore gem *pun intended* for you. I recently inherited L'Oreal - Hidden Gems from a friend who does not like textured polishes. Being the liquid sand lover that I am, I willingly offered it a new home where it will be well-loved.

China Glaze ~ But Of Corpse

Happy Sunday everyone!

I hope you all had a great time trick or treating or attending a Halloween party :) I had a long work day and went to bed early, so I did not celebrate Halloween. Still, I wanted to dress my nails properly. Since I have done quite a few Halloween designs this year, I felt like wearing a plain polish this time and the one I went with was But Of Corpse from China Glaze's most recent Halloween collection called Apocalypse Of Color.

Neon Drip Nails for Halloween

[Halloween] Crime Scene Nails

I have another Halloween-ish manicure for you! I have seen quite a few crime scene nails like this before, but never did some myself, because my free-hand skills aren't the best.
Being a blogger for a little over three years, it is about time to step up my nail art game. I feel like I owe that to you, my fellow readers. But I am not only doing this for you, but also to see myself evolve, so one day I will be able to look back and see the improvements I have made. Even though my free-hand designs are nowhere near perfect, I will share them with you anyway. That way you see that nail bloggers aren't perfect and their (or at least my) manicures are a fail from time to time.

[Halloween] Black Cat watermarble nails

Happy Sunday!

Halloween is less than a week away. Do you already have plans for that day? It is not a big thing over here, so I won't be attending a party or such. Still I like to get a bit spooky on my nails to get me in the Trick or Treat mood. If you are still looking for Halloween nail art inspiration, here is a little watermarble and black cat design for you.

Giveaway Time! Win a set of 3 Mont Bleu Nail Files!

Happy Friday!

I have a little treat for you today! I was recently contacted by the PR of Mont Bleu if I'd like to give away a 3-piece set of their nail files. I agreed to run that giveaway, because you my fellow readers really need to try their glass files! I reviewed a few of their products here.

Ever since I started painting my nails I have been using nothing but crystal nail files. Unlike emery board or metal files, these will not damage your nails and they will last you forever (unless you drop them on tile floor - RIP little OPI crystal file).
Mont Bleu is a Czech Republic based company that seriously makes some of the best glass nail files I have ever tried! I have one of their standard size files at home and always carry one of their travel nail files in my purse - you never know when you tear a nail, so it is good to keep a file handy.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I will draw the winner on November 1, 2014. Afterwards, I will provide Mont Bleu with the winner's e-mail address. There are four color variants to choose from (Black, Orange, Gold and Lilac). The company will contact you and arrange shipping of your prize. Open internationally.

Throw Back Thursday ~ My Favorite Halloween Manicures

Every year I wish Halloween was a big thing here in Germany, too. There is something about spooky decorations, Halloween candy and trick or treating that I really like. And of course I adore everything pumpkin! So I cannot help it, but I also have to wear something Halloween-ish on my nails, too. If you are looking for some nail art inspiration or simply enjoy spooky nail designs, check out some of the Halloween manicures I have done since I started this blog!

[Foodie Post] Banana - Peanut Butter Mug Cake

One of the things I probably love most about Autumn are gloomy afternoons. When the weather is chilly outside I love to get cozy on my couch. I light a candle, make myself a hot cup of tea, grab a blanket and just dream away. To round up a pleasent afternoon I treat myself to a yummy piece of cake. But let's face it, on such days I am just too lazy to go and get something from the bakery or bake some cake myself. Recently I discovered mug cakes and went a bit crazy experimenting with different ingredients and flavors. The combination of banana and peanut butter is one of my favorites.

Smitten Polish - Elixir

I recently placed my very first order with the Dutch indie nail polish retailer Hypnotic Polish. One of the polishes I got was Elixir by the brand Smitten Polish. I had seen swatches of their polishes before, but wasn't really on the lookout for a particular color. The shade Elixir spontaneously jumped into my cart. Firstly, because it is a deep teal color and I love teal. Secondly, the color is exclusively available at Hypnotic Polish. Let me tell you, I did not regret buying this gem!

Sugar Spun Candy Corn Nails

Hi everyone!

Today I have for you my first Halloween themed manicure. Of course I had to do some candy corn nail art, because they are the epitome of Halloween. I admit I have never tried candy corn, because it is not available here, but they look really cute. I combined the candy corn theme with the sugar spun method, which I have been meaning to try for quite a while.

Pumpkin Nails

Happy Sunday,

I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend! For me, this just has not been my week. What started out as a little cold on Friday has developed into a full blown sinusitis by now. Fingers crossed I can get rid of these nasty bacteria soon!
When I went to a pumpkin dinner at a friend's house recently, I obviously had to match my nails to the theme. So I played around with brushes, stamping plates and threw a little glitter in the mix.

[Fall Favorite] OPI ~ Ski Teal We Drop

Hi everyone!

Today I have just a short post for you. I am not feeling well, as my grandfather unexpectedly passed away this past weekend. Yesterday was his funeral and I still tear up thinking of it. I am shocked, in denial, angry, blaming myself... Okay, before I burst into tears again, let's jump into today's post.

OPI - Ski Teal We Drop is one of my favorite Fall nail polishes. It is a deep teal creme and an all time classic that will suit most people.

Sally Hansen Designer Collection Fall 2014 ~ Rhododendron & Pink Dream

Good evening everyone!

Today I have two of the new Sally Hansen Designer collection polishes for Fall/Winter 2014. Once again, Sally Hansen teamed up with designers Prabal Gurung and Tracy Reese to create this set. I have to admit I am not into Fashion and I have no idea who these two people are, but as long as they come up with pretty shades I am fine, haha.
For this manicure I layered the iridescent glitter topper Pink Dream 701 over the deep red Rhododendron 703.

Roasted Pumpkin Salad

Happy Monday!

Fall season is pumpkin season. Every year I look forward to cooking everything pumpkin, from soup over roasted pumpkin to my homemade pumpkin spice latte.
This past weekend we met some friends to have a pumpkin dinner. At first we thought having a starter, main course and dessert all made with pumpkin might be a bit overkill, but it really was not. Pumpkin is just so versatile and you can create so many different dishes with it.
As a starter I made a roasted pumpkin salad and we enjoyed it so much, I simply need to share this quick and easy recipe with you!

But before we dive into burgundy shades, browns and deep blue hues, I have one last summer manicure to show you. Chumash from the Malibu collection by Dance Legend is the nail polish I wore during my holidays in Spain.

Essence Aquatix ~ Under Water Love

Hi everyone,

I know I am late to the party, but the Essence Aquatix Trend Edition hadn't really been on my radar until I saw it in a drugstore in Spain. Of course I was immediately drawn to the textured polish of the bunch. 06 Under Water Love is a vibrant deep blue with lots of teal shimmer. In the bottle it has a slight duochrome effect, but that does not translate onto the nails.

[Swatch & Review] Ponyhütchen~ Devil In Disguise

Hi everyone!

I am back and I apologize for not posting more 31DC2014 manicures. After my vacation I just did not feel the nail art vibe and was pretty uninspired. Things never work out when I pressure myself, so I decided to take a mini-break from nail polish and blogging. I might at some point finish the challenge or start over again in another month. Kudos to everyone who finished the challenge!

Today I have for you another nail polish from Ponyhütchen. I already reviewed one of their nail polishes called Hepcat. The second shade I got with my order is called Devil In Disguise and is a deep purple with hex glitter in pink and dark grey.

#31DC2014 ~ Day 21 Inspired By A Color

Hello everyone,

I am back from my vacation in Spain! I am glad to be back in the world of painting nails and blogging, but at the same time I am sad, because I had a really good time down south.
Anyway, I need to get back on track with the 31DC2014 and today's prompt is "Inspired by a color". For the first time ever I tried some ombre nails in my favorite color purple and yep, I did fail at these.

#31DC2014 ~ Day 17 Glitter

Hey,

I am back! You might have realized that days 14-16 of the challenge are missing. Well, that is because I did not manage to prepare all the designs in advance. I tried my best, but I simply couldn't make it and I did not want to put myself under too much pressure. This challenge should be fun, not a chore. But don't worry, I will deliver all the missing designs when I am back from my holidays.

For the glitter prompt I chose Hexy Bikini from the KBShimmer late Summer collection (I believe). If you have been following my blog for a while, you might know that I love textured nail polishes. So of course I had to snag this one when it became available at Harlow & Co.

#31DC2014 ~ Day 13 Animal Print

Recently, I received one of the new OPI Nordic collection polishes in the mail. The shade With A Nice Finn-ish is a golden bronze shimmer polish. Sadly, the finish of this isn't too nice, because it is rather frosty. Also this kind of color is hard to pull off for me, as it clashed with my pasty skin tone. So instead of rocking it on its own, I decided to incorporate With A Nice Finn-ish into a leopard print design.

Hello everyone!

By the time you're reading this I will be enjoying the sun on the Spanish island Mallorca. I really needed some time away from work and every day life, so I can start all over when I come home. Hence, the posts for the following days of the 31 Days Challenge have been scheduled in advance and I won't be able to reply to comments until I come back on the 20th. In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy the nail designs I prepared.
The prompt for day is polka dots and I went with a textured dot design.

I was really looking forward to the Rainbow prompt of this challenge. I had seen a rainbow dotted manicure on Oooh, Shinies and fell in love with the design. So my rainbow manicure was heavily inspired by Bregje, but I added my own personal touch to it by free-handing a rainbow and adding a bit of holo goodness.

On the other hand it means I have to pre-schedule nine posts for the challenge. I am working hard on it, so fingers crossed I will make it!

#31DC2014 ~ Day 06 Violet Nails

Purple or violet is by far the color I have the most nail polishes of. That did not make choosing colors for today's design any easier. I know I wanted to use Cosmic Rainbow from Dance Legend, which I got a couple of days ago with my very first Dance Legend order (side note: it was my very first Dance Legend order, it took 6 weeks to get to me and everything made it in one piece). Seeing Nicole from Young Wild and Polished posting her awesome dotted nail designs all the time, I also knew that I wanted to tackle the perfect dotticure. Well, I ended up with something being far from perfect, but that is what this challenge is for, improving one's nail art skills, right?!

#31DC2014 ~ Day 04 Green Nails

We are getting closer to my comfort zone colors. While yellow and orange nails do not suit me very well, I love wearing green shades on my nails! So I got inspired by him to do some camouflage nails.

#31DC2014 ~ Day 03 Yellow Nails

Today's prompt for the 31 Days of Nail Art challenge is yellow, another of those colors that is hard to pull off for me. Gladly I found some cheap yellow Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear nail polish in a Dollar store last weekend that I wanted to use for my yellow manicure.
I ended up making some starry watermarble decals using Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Lemon Zest and China Glaze - Sun-Kissed.

Yet, when I went through my stash looking for appropriate colors for today's prompt, I was surprised by how many orange nail polishes I actually own. #31DC2014 ~ Day 01 Red Nails

Hi everyone,
welcome to September! The hot summer season is over (not that we had one over here) and I am back into full blogging swing. To start out again, I have decided to tackle the 31 Days Challenge. During this challenge, people post their manicures according to a different prompt every day of September. I will try my very best to keep up with this challenge and we will see how it goes.
The first prompt is red and I wanted to start out with something rather simple. OPI - Big Apple Red is one of my favorite red nail polishes of all time. It holds a special place in my heart, because I bought it on my first trip to New York City.

Catrice ~ Metallicious from the Metallure LE

I haven't bought any Catrice nail polish in quite a while. When I saw the press release for their Metallure limited edition, I was intrigued by the packaging. When I checked out the products in store, I was a bit disappointed, because everything was so frosty and shimmery. Still I took one of their polishes home with me, because I thought a metallic nail polish would work well for stamping. The shade I bought is called Metallicious and is a darkened gold with a hint of olive green.

#LLWeirdScience ~ Cosmic Latte Galaxy Nails

Hi everyone!

It is time for another round of Lacquer Legion, a monthly nail art challenge organized by Sarah from Chalkboard Nails, Sammy from The Nailasaurus, Leslie from work/play/polish and Rebecca from Rebecca Likes Nails. The prompt for this month was Weird Science and being a (weird) scientist myself, I had to take part. If you do not want to read about the scientific background of my manicure, just hit "Click for more" below ;)

You're probably wondering, what the heck is Cosmic Latte. No, it is not the latest drink from Starbucks, even though the name was inspired by one of their drinks. According to astronomers from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Cosmic Latte is the average color of the universe. The scientists measured the spectral range of the light from thousands of galaxies and the average color was a very pale yellow/beige. FYI, the hexadecimal RGB value for Cosmic Latte is #FFF8E7.

In order to find a name for the color, the scientists asked for suggestions from the readers of the article published in the Washington Post. While Cappuccino Cosmico received the most votes, they ended up naming it Cosmic Latte, as one of the researchers was reading the Post while drinking a Latte at Starbucks, which had a very similar color. I would have totally gone for Big Bang Buff/Blush/Beige, which was another suggestion :D

Sephora Haul

Good evening!

When Sephora.com announced that they were now shipping to Germany the news came like a thunderbolt and spread like a wildfire across the beauty community. Of course I had to go to their website, add all the things I have been lusting after into my cart and was shocked to see how much money one can spend on make up and skin care items. Instead of ordering I went to bed and decided to make a wishlist of the things I really wanted and set myself a limit of money I'd spend. So here it is, my very first Sephora haul. By the way, I still cannot get over the fact that they do not ship nail polish... Farewell Formula X... sigh....

DIY Nail & Cuticle Oil

Hi everyone!

As a nail polish blogger it is important to me to always have neat and healthy nails and cuticles. To always keep my hands in perfect condition, I use hand lotion and cuticle balms or oils on a regular basis. Therefore, I keep several hand care products at home, in my purse and at work (I am currently using 5 or 6 different hand lotions, 3 cuticle balms and 2 oils, so it is safe to say I am obsessed with hand care...).

When I first started out in nail polish, the very first product I fell in love with was CND's Solar Oil. The light oil with the marzipan scent still is a staple in my nail care collection. Sadly, this is not easily available here in Germany and oftentimes I run out of it before I manage to order online. Looking at the ingredients of several nail oils I have used up until now I thought it should not be too hard to make one myself at home. The recipe below has been tried and tested by me for a while now and I hope you will find it useful! After the recipe I included a little background information on the components of this oil, in case you are interested in what is doing what to your skin :)

Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine ~ Greenberry

Good evening everyone!

I am back with another Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine polish for you. The UK nail polish brand first introduced these back in mid-2012. Gelly does not refer to a jelly finish, but to a gel-like, glossy effect. Greenberry was part of their Gellies for Spring 2013, but as far as I know all the Gelly shades that have been released until now are permanent.

90's Neon Nails

Hey everyone,

this year three of my friends turned 30 and they decided to organize a 90s party together, which took place last weekend. Since I turned 30 this March, too, they also asked me to join, but a 120s party does not sound quite as cool, does it!?
We were supposed to dress up in 90s fashion, but sadly (or rather thank god, just think neon crop tops, platform shoes and flashy windbreakers... yikes) I did not keep any of my outfits from then. So I went with 90s appropriate nails instead.
