since many of you were curious about what things I bought while I was in the US, I thought I'd share with you a little haul post. I already tried some of the items so I can provide a little first impression, too. So let's get started :)
First up is the food stuff :) Of course I had to pick of a Cajun seasoning whilst in New Orleans. I love love love the kitchen there and I tried lots of local specialties such as Gumbo (looks weird, tastes amazing), Jambalaja, shrimp & crawfish ettouffée and Po-Boy with blackened chicken. Now I can put the typical Cajun taste onto everything at home.
On my last day in NYC I came across a Trader Joe's on Broadway. This may be just a grocery store, but it was love at first sight. I could have bought that store empty, if only there wasn't a limit on baggage weight, lol. Plus, you're not allowed to import food into the EU, so I only picked up those two teas. They're so good, I am afraid of running out one day. Ok, enough rambling about food, on with the more interesting stuff ;)
Last year I didn't find the Bath & Body Works in NYC, so this time I looked up the way from our hotel to that store beforehand. This store is heaven - if you like scented candles, shower gel and body lotion like me. I mainly wanted to get some candles and luckily they were on sale for $22 for two. The ones I got are Twisted Peppermint, Marshmallow Fireside and Merry Cookie, though I had a hard time picking only three. I passed on the shower gels and the handwash, because the candles were already pretty heavy and somehow I had to carry my suitcase to the airport.
Now let's come to the nail polish, because that is what you're all here for, right?! In NOLA I stopped by at Rite Aid, because I wanted to check out the JulieG nail polish line. The permanent range didn't excite me much, but her Gum Drops Holiday collection caught my attention. I ended up getting only Sugar Plum Fairy, a deep purple textured polish. At a CVS in NOLA I came across NOPI's Gumdrop collection and bought That's What I Mint along with Essie's Sable Collar from the recent Winter collection and On A Silver Platter from the Encrusted Treasures collection. I thought about getting the hideous Belugaria polish just for fun, but quickly abandonned that thought, as I would not wear this polish out.
At Urban Outfitters I wanted to get Sea Dust, because it is (not a perfect) dupe for Deborah Lippmann's Mermaid's Dream. Since one polish was $5 and two cost only $8, I threw Mystic in the cart, too. From Sinful Colors' texture range I bought Emerald Envy and Blue Persuasion. I guess I can't go wrong with a polish that is only $1.99, can I?!
I was on a mission to get the Revlon Perfumerie nail polishes, but I simply couldn't find them anywhere. I had almost given up on them, but then I found an almost complete display in the very last drugstore I went to on my final day in NYC. Yay! The three I took home with me are Wintermint (another, better dupe for Mermaid's Dream), Autumn Spice and Fresh Linen. Once they're dry, they indeed smell like mint, cinnamon and laundry detergent, but I guess top coat might eliminate that scent on the nails.
Of course I didn't return to Germany with just nail polish, but also some make up in my suitcase. At home I had made a list of the things I wanted to check out so I wouldn't go overboard with my purchases - which is likely to happen, because the make up aisle is huge and overwhelming! A thing that bugs me is that in the States the drugstores do not have testers, so you're buying blindly (on the other hand, they offer a great return policy). I got the Olay Fresh Effects "BB Cream", because I wanted a tinted moisturizer with SPF. I don't know why here in Germany there are only so few day creams with SPF. Sadly, this cream is waaaay to sheer to cover or even out anything, but I will try to use it as a moisturizer underneath my makeup.
Another thing I love about US drugstores: the shade range in foundations is great! They offer something for the lightest to the darkest skin tones. The most common shade in German drugstore foundations is an oompa loompa orange and I cannot find a good match here. The Neutrogena Skin Clearing Foundation in Ivory seems to be a perfect match, but I haven't worn it, yet. Same applies for the Covergirl Clean Whipped Creme foundation.
A quite popular product that does not live up to the hype IMHO is the Maybelline Dream Bouncy blush. I got the shade Coffee Cake, but don't like the cosistency and color pay off is also weak.
The Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Branded and the Wet 'n Wild Trio in Walking On Eggshells I absolutely love!
Let us see what that Maybelline Baby Lips Dr. Rescue and the L'Oreal True Match Concealer Crayon can do for me.
Also at Urban Outfitters I came across a set of three shades of the NYX Butter Glosses, which I've been meaning to try for quite some time now. I found 10 bucks for three of those to be a good deal and I do not regret my purchase. I love the color, the consistency and the smell of these! Another let down for me was the Color Riche Balm from L'Oreal. I got the shade Heavenly Berry and this does not have any color! I expected this to be sheer, but when I swatch it on my hand there is not the lightest wash of color. The Maybelline Color Whisper in Lust For Blush is a nice sheer pink which I like for Spring. And the Revlon Lacquer Balm in Provocateur I adore! What a gorgeous shade of red! It doesn't last long on the lips but it moisturizes them fairly well.
Last but not least I got a few items from Sephora that were on my list. Of course I had to check out their new Formula X range and man, that really has some pretty polishes! I got a creme polish in the color Brainchild and a glittery deep blue color called Galaxy. For my unruly brows I purchased the Anastasia Brow Wiz and Brow Powder Duo. Since I have heard nothing but good things about this stuff, I hope they'll be worth the price tag for me. Same applies to the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder in Diffused Light. I have worn this on New Year's Eve and really liked how it looked on the skin. The Tarte LipSurgence in Envy I've wanted ever since a friend told me that is what Max Black from Two Broke Girls was wearing.
I also got me a new pair of Converse shoes, but I forgot to take a picture of them, so I'll just include a stock photo for you to see. Converse are the most comfartable shoes of all times for me and I cannot live without them. Right now it's too cold and wet to wear them, but I cannot wait to take these babies out for a walk once it gets warmer.
I think that is everything I bought during my trip to the US. Oh, I also got a Starbucks collectors mug from NOLA and NYC and a copy of the current issue of Nail It magazine, which again I forgot to take pictures of. And now that's really it :) You made it to the end of this post! Despite its length I hope you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading, wishing you a great day.
