#LLWeirdScience ~ Cosmic Latte Galaxy Nails

Hi everyone!

It is time for another round of Lacquer Legion, a monthly nail art challenge organized by Sarah from Chalkboard Nails, Sammy from The Nailasaurus, Leslie from work/play/polish and Rebecca from Rebecca Likes Nails. The prompt for this month was Weird Science and being a (weird) scientist myself, I had to take part. If you do not want to read about the scientific background of my manicure, just hit "Click for more" below ;)

You're probably wondering, what the heck is Cosmic Latte. No, it is not the latest drink from Starbucks, even though the name was inspired by one of their drinks. According to astronomers from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Cosmic Latte is the average color of the universe. The scientists measured the spectral range of the light from thousands of galaxies and the average color was a very pale yellow/beige. FYI, the hexadecimal RGB value for Cosmic Latte is #FFF8E7.

In order to find a name for the color, the scientists asked for suggestions from the readers of the article published in the Washington Post. While Cappuccino Cosmico received the most votes, they ended up naming it Cosmic Latte, as one of the researchers was reading the Post while drinking a Latte at Starbucks, which had a very similar color. I would have totally gone for Big Bang Buff/Blush/Beige, which was another suggestion :D

As a base for my Galaxy Nails I went with OPI - You're So Vain-illa, which was the closest to Cosmic Latte I could find (even though it might be a tadbit too yellow). Barry M Gelly in Lychee or OPI - My Vampire Is Buff are close, too.
I sponged on the nebula using P2 All Light polish in 060 Sassy Stone, Catrice - Out Of The Dark and The GlamoureX Factor. For some of extra sparkle I added a bit of P2 - 020 Get Gorgeous from their Lost in Glitter range. The white accents were done with Wet n Wild - French White Crème.
I am really surprised how well these beige/brown/golden shades go together. So you do not always have to create Galaxy Nails in the traditional black/blue/purple color combination.

I hope you enjoyed this manicure and do not forget to check out the other Lacquer Legion Weird Science creations!

  1. Thank you Deborah! I wish I could remember how on earth I came across this weird fact, lol.

  2. Super awesome! Love both the idea behind it and the mani itself :)
